This past saturday a couple of us had lunch at the Richardsons,an American couple, who have been researching black history for years. The best meal I have had in a long time , I might add.

While everybody got engaged in an after lunch deep conversation I had the chance to go through some of the rich collections of the book shelf. I came across J. A Rogers´s ´´100 Amazing facts about the Negro with complete Proof´ first published in 1957. One of the facts the book talks about is the black Queen of England, Charlotte Sophia. I learned later that she was also known as the ´monkey´Queen.

According to the book the Queen was Consort of George III(1738-1820) and the Grandmother of Queen Victoria. She is also a direct descendant of Margarita de Castro y Sousa, a black branch of the Portuguese Royal House.

Wikipedia which totaly didn´t see the need to mention her black decent says ´´Queen Charlotte was a patroness of the arts, known to johann Christian Bach and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, among others. She was also an amateur botanist who helped establish Kew Gardens.´´.
