 Here are more facts on Ethiopian international migration:

  • According to government reports ,the number of migrant workers leaving Ethiopia increased from an average of 23 per month in 1996 to 410 per month in 1999.
  • Prior to the 1974 revolution all Ethiopians who attended university in the country remained at the completion of their work and the vast majority of those who studied overseas returned to Ethiopia. Studies show only one Ethiopan physician was working outside of the country as recently as 1972.
  • Government reports say, of the 2,491 general medicine practitioners trained in Ethiopia between 1988 and 2001alone ,one thrid have already left the country .

                                                

  • Only 200 of the 600 Addis Ababa University academic staff sent abroad for study between 1980 and 2000 returned. The return rate of Ethiopian students is even lower: Of the 22,700 sent abroad to study between 1980 and 1991, only 25 percent came home.
  • Apart from the mainstream migration routes targetted by many Ethiopians such as North America and Western Europe, there are significant number of Ethiopians living in Iraq,Serbia,Uzbakistan ,Pakistan..etc.
