Us

We are driving back from one of the travels . We usually leave early in the morning and pack some bananas and sandwiches for lunch. Everyone is pretty hungry by the time we made it back to the closest decent restaurant. We are having the usual arguments:  who will eat what and everyone should have their own orders and no one is allowed to share …etcetera ..etcetera

Usually am the quietly listening person in some corner of the car. Discussions over sharing took me back to what happened on the field.

Them

It hasn’t rained in three years. The last green leaf you see is miles and miles away.  Most of them have sent their children to near by countries. The children work in small jobs and send back some money. A kilo of sorghum costs 6 birr and that’s all the family can afford. It’s just too little to make a flour out of so they eat it roasted. That’s the only thing they will have all day.

As I was talking to the person she started eating on the roasted sorghum and invited me  ” Can we share this together?”
